My posts trace my over 55 years in the martial arts (both funny and serious), friendships with legendary martial artists (such as Bruce Lee), appearances on major network TV shows (like "That's Incredible!"), travels around the country and world as a competitor and national coach, and what I've learned about life in the process.

Old IKA group photo
Sorry for the delay in getting my next post finished and uploaded. It's a story that's taking longer to explain than I had anticipated when I began writing it. In the meantime, I'm posting a photo of the old IKA gang. I talked about George Byrd and Ron Glaubitz in my last post. They are 2nd and 3rd from the left in the second row. In the front row is Tonny Tulleners (who defeated Chuck Norris 3 out of 3 times and placed 3rd in kumite at the first WUKO world championships in Tokyo in 1970), Okuyama San of Canada, Soke Kubota, and Ben Otake, who trained many great fighters both here and in Puerto Rico. (One of Ben's students was Manny San, who is pictured at the left end of the 2nd row. He tied for 3rd in kata at the '75 world championships - Sensei Nishiyam's ITKF event in LA.) There's a bunch of other great guys and karateka in the photo. I'm at the right end of the 2nd row. I don't know the year this was taken.

Jim,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Steve Lang. I must have met you around the time this picture was taken. I'm standing next to Pedro, third in on the right in the last row. I was Ron McCausland's student. Im wondering if that was after a test since there are 4 or 5 of us from the Sacramento Dojo. I was saddened to learn of Kenny's Death I believe the Last time I saw Kenny was when a bunch of us got together at Ron's house just before he passed. I was standing next to Kenny the night he was cut. We used to bounce at that place after training. Free beer and Pizza and there was often an opportunity to try out your step punch.(almost every night). Kenny was back training after about a week. He was taking it easy and had his arm in a sling for quite a while but he was training none the less. I remember visiting Your Dojo with Ron and maybe Kenny and catching arrows in the basement. I remember they had erasers on the tips but they still smarted if you were not quick enough to avoid them. I am currently training in Arizona with Tom Hyder. I thought after many years of on and off training
and finally back surgery, I was done, but it was not to be. I am experiencing a renewed passion for training, a second wind as it were at 65. I have yet to contact my old sempei in the IKA. I enjoyed seeing the pictures and the references to some of the people I trained with, and caroused with, Tom Sadowski, George Byrd, Ron Glaubitz, Val,Bobin among others and of course my Sensei's Kubota san, McCausland San and Otake San. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your blog. I appreciate reminiscing with you.OUS! Steve Lang
I can't remember the occasion. But it could well have been a test. Sad losing Kenny and Ron. Adam and George Byrd are gone too. Great reconnecting with you. I just turned 69 and know about the age thing. I'm not as active or fast or strong as I used to be. But I'm good in all of those for someone my age and I'll take that as a bonus. I'd definitely recommend getting going again. Just be careful who you pick to train you. Take care, Jim
ReplyDeleteHi Jim,
ReplyDeleteGreat photo. I trained with a few of those guys in the 70's under Soke Tak Kubota. These names are connected with memories of good times at the Hollywood dojos, and the first Glendale dojo.
Sad to hear about some of the guys who have passed. Did not know about Kenny or Ron. If my memory is correct, Ron used to come to the dojo on Kenmore Ave in Hollywood to train and teach classes. I read about George a few months ago in the IKA news. They all had great fighting spirit.
Thanks for the updates.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteRon trained originally with Soke, then moved to Sacramento and ran his own dojo. He later moved back and worked building movie sets. Soke called me the night he died. Very sad. He was young. 70s were a great time at HQ dojo. A lot of great memories too from those days.
Take care, Jim
